As this view aptly shows the Union Lumber Co. Bandmill was built to last forever. Literally at the time of its' construction in 1887 the best estimates determined the supply of appropriate old growth redwood timber would last for 200 years. It might have, were it not for chainsaws and bulldozers replacing dragsaws and steam donkeys. What took a crew of eleven or twelve men 3 to 4 days to accomplish in the late 1800's would take half as many men a few hours by the 1950's.An industry and way of life that was supposed to last 200 years was consummated in 80.
Located on the rugged northcoast of California, accessible only by stage and small ocean schooner, the Ft. Bragg mill by necessity had to be constructed out of the materials at hand. No brick, no mortar nor iron beams coming around the horn. Hence while Redwood was not a terrific structural wood, if you made the beams big enough, and supported them on close enough centers you could hold up just about anything. Such was the theory of the Union Mill. But for a few steel girders patched in under the headrigs, likely during a retrofit in the 50's or 60's there wasn't a steel beam in the place. The band mill, three stories high, 400 ft long housing and supporting tons of earthshaking equipment, to render huge watersoaked logs into planks and boards, was a dense, dripping, hissing forest of old growth in its own right.
There is a commercial airport in Arcata (serviced by United
Express and Horizon Airlines) and several non-commercial airfields in the
Eureka area. If you plan to fly in, let us know and we will pick you up.
